Nuclear medicine is a medical speciality involving the application of radioactive substances in diagnosing and treating disease. Nuclear medicine scans are usually conducted by a radiographers. Nuclear medicine, in a sense, is “radiology done inside out” or “endoradiology” because it records radiation emitting from within the body rather than radiation generated by external sources like X-rays.

How should I prepare?

You may be asked to wear a gown during the exam, or you may be allowed to wear your own clothing.
Women should always inform their physician or radiographer if there is any possibility that they are pregnant or if they are breastfeeding. You should also tell them if you have any allergies, recent illnesses or other medical conditions.
Jewellery and other metallic accessories should be left at home if possible or removed before the exam because they may interfere with the procedure.
